Field school started on the 2nd of July 2012. Learning about stone tools and some patience from the instructors when we were trying to knap, we finally made some of our own artefacts. For over a week we have been engrossed in Karonga under the MEMSAP project and have the land during transect survey speak to us. We have not only sharpened our trowelling skills, developed a keener eye for spotting artefacts, but we have experienced using total station, GPS, piece plotting, recording as well as site mapping. We have experienced what it’s like to be immersed in a practical world of archaeology rather than the side of theory.
An added excitement involved having to excavate your own piece of unit. Generally artefacts are found in the screen. Occasionally and due to great care while excavating some are found in situ or in the place where they came from in the soil. All in all, it takes coordinated teamwork between diggers and the instructors in different sections to come up with such great job during the field school. The process and levelling the total station is painstaking but at the end of the day interesting things come out.
