After months of closure, new life seems imminent for Tisunge! Lower Shire Heritage Centre. Last month, a World Bank official and deputy directors of the Malawi Department of National Parks and Wildlife (DNPW) came to Tisunge! to discuss its future. Malawi Government is implementing the World Bank funded Shire River Basin Management Programme. Lengwe National Park is to benefit from the programme with new infrastructure and technical support. DNPW sees the importance of Tisunge! for Lengwe and gracefully offered some support to be extended to improve facilities at Tisunge!. The details of the support are currently being worked out.
In exchange Mlambe Foundation offered to look for a volunteer to manage Tisunge! after reopening. Tim van der Linden has accepted to take up this challenge for a period of 18 months. Tim studied social work in the Netherlands and has volunteered for several projects in Malawi before. We trust he is the right person for the job.
Before Tim can start, a memorandum of understanding needs to be signed between the Ministry of Tourism, National Parks and Culture and the Lower Shire Heritage Trust. It is our hope that this proces can be expedited given the current opportunities.
